FAQ
What are photoluminescent guidance systems and markings?
Photoluminescent guidance systems and markings are made of special materials that store light and release it again in the dark for a defined period of time. They are used for safe orientation and evacuation in buildings, especially in the event of a power failure or smoke development.
What legal and normative requirements apply to photoluminescent systems?
Photoluminescent safety guidance systems must at least meet the requirements of DIN 67510-1:2020-05, Class C. DIN ISO 16069 (design and application of safety guidance systems) and workplace regulations ASR A2.3 and ASR A1.3 are also relevant for planning and application.
Where are photoluminescent guidance systems and markings used?
They are used wherever safe escape and orientation must be guaranteed in the event of a power failure or smoke, e.g. in office buildings, industrial facilities, hospitals, hotels, meeting places, underground car parks and public institutions.
How long must photoluminescent markings remain visible after the lighting fails?
The minimum requirements for installed components in accordance with DIN 67510-2 are:
- Required luminance 10 minutes after removal of excitation illumination: ≥ 30 mcd/m²
- Required luminance 60 minutes after removal of excitation illumination: ≥ 7 mcd/m²
What requirements apply to design and placement?
- Guide markings should be applied continuously where possible (at least 4 markings per metre).
- Steps, ramps and differences in height must be marked.
- Emergency exit doors must be clearly highlighted.
- Escape route signs on doors must be affixed at a height of 1.2 to 1.5 metres above the floor, not on the door leaf.
- Floors in multi-storey buildings should be numbered and equipped with staircase information systems.
What factors influence the luminosity of photoluminescent products?
The luminance depends on:
- Intensity and duration of the excitation illumination (light source)
- Type of pigments used
- Other environmental conditions, such as ambient temperature
How are photoluminescent signs and markings labelled?
The marking on the product complies with DIN 67510-1 and also includes information on the luminance class and the manufacturer. For safety guidance systems in accordance with DIN ISO 16069, marking in accordance with DIN ISO 16069 is also permitted. Sample mark – DIN 67510-1 – 150/22 – Class C
What advantages do photoluminescent guidance systems offer over purely electrical safety lighting?
- Function even in the event of a total power failure or failure of the electrical emergency lighting
- Increase reliability and redundancy
- No maintenance of electrical components necessary
- Particularly effective in the event of smoke emission, as they can be installed close to the floor
Can I install photoluminescent guidance systems myself?
To ensure that they comply with standards and function correctly, installation should therefore preferably be carried out by specialists.
How does PERMALUX support companies in implementation?
PERMALUX offers:
- Consulting, planning and standard-compliant implementation of long-lasting luminescent guidance systems
- Delivery and installation of all necessary components (markings, signs, escape route signage)
- Regular maintenance and inspection of the systems for visibility and up-to-date status These FAQs are aimed at operators of large properties, safety officers and fire safety officers and provide a quick, standard-based overview of the topic of long-lasting luminescent guidance systems, markings and signs.
